The expansion of casino gambling in Atlantic City, with half a dozen new casinos approved and under construction, was eclipsed in the news by the public interest in Uston’s lawsuit against the Casino Control Commission. There had also been a 1979 Sports Illustrated article about Keith Taft’s at-that-time legal concealable blackjack computer, which, naturally, featured Ken Uston modeling the device. Everywhere you turned you saw Ken Uston.

From the casinos of the big gaming cities to the virtual world, blackjack tournaments are cropping up everywhere. This means that you can play them at almost any time of day or not from home or on the road. There are some differences between land-based casino blackjack tournament play and online casino blackjack tournament play, though, and you should know about those differences before deciding to proceed with one or the other.
Many people go to blackjack tournaments because they love the thrill of the interactive game. They enjoy sitting at the table with their opponents, round after round, watching their faces change and making their blackjack bets according to a precise combination of skill level, tournament design and observance of opponents. They love the elimination rounds in which winners move on and losers go home and they think that seeing the guts and the glory is all a part of what makes blackjack tournament gaming so fun.
For those people, land-based casinos are the place to go. They get the interaction they are looking for in a way that participating in online casino blackjack tournaments will just never ever give them. However, these people shouldn’t rule out online blackjack tournaments altogether. For one thing, online tournaments are available more readily, so people with a busy schedule can use them to keep their skills up in between trips to land-based casino blackjack tournaments.
Additionally, one of the things which make a good blackjack tournament player is the development of a wide range of skills to be used at discretion. Practicing different skills often feels safer in an online environment, so blackjack tournament players who aren’t as willing to take risks with new techniques in their land-based play may find that practicing them online is a way to get used to using them so that they can enhance land-based casino blackjack tournament play while not risking losing face.
For some people, the chance to win money is more important than the thrill of the blackjack tournament itself. Some people find that the noise and the lights and the human interaction, while part of the blackjack tournament, are second to the task at hand which is to be the winner at the end of the game. For these people, online blackjack tournaments may suit their style better. They can participate from the comfort of their own homes, which also generally allows them to participate in more blackjack tournaments than they could participate in if they had to work out the details of getting to the casino.
This means that casino blackjack tournaments often offer more opportunity for an increased chance of playing and therefore an increased chance of winning and therefore an increased bank account. Many people use a combination of online casino blackjack tournament play with land-based casino blackjack tournament play to meet all of their different gaming needs.
Try some online blackjack tournaments action and obtain (but just for a limited time) an incredible 111% bonus up to $1100! They like to get everything out on the table in the hopes of taking an ungodly lead early. They live on the edge and risk it all!

If this describes you, you’re a Tournament Blackjack Maniac. Blackjack Tournaments Tips has compiled a bunch of brief tips for the maniac in all of us. Enjoy!

Try to stick to 3 and 5 handed rounds in both tournaments and also in Sit & Go games. The shorter durations give conservative players less time to react to your open aggression.

If you’re up more than 2 maximum bets, walk away from the table for a hand. However, it’s very important to make it appear as if you’ve left unintentionally, rather than having placed a minimum bet deliberately. If one of the other players catches up or gets too close, you can go back to being a Tournament Blackjack maniac the next hand.

If you’re wondering why the minimum bet has to look unintentional, this next tip should clarify things: Maintain your table image! If you’re chatty, you should be telling people to ‘go all in’ and tell them that you’re shooting for a ‘record chip count’. You get the idea.

If you’re ahead in the last hand, look for opportunities to surrender-trap. Max bet, and if the dealer up card isn’t to your liking, surrender. You’ve already cornered the rest of the table into max-betting, and now they have to beat a good dealer hand in order to win.

Maximize chip count even if you can’t catch up to a chip leader. Your hyper aggressive play might earn you a wildcard slot.

If there’s enough game selection out there, hit and run on your Sit & Go games. Don’t stay at the same table; move around. You can maximize the shock factor of your play in this manner.

In long tournaments, or when faced with a table full of other Tournament Blackjack maniacs, be prepared to suddenly switch modes to conservative playing. Always have a different mindset in your back pocket, just in case maniac-style isn’t cutting it.

Go nuts on dealer 5’s and 6’s. Double 11 or less, split anything you can split and redouble 11 or less on the split! 5 ’s and 6’s are where you get your best odds. Take advantage of them.

Ultimately, the goal during any interaction with casino personnel should be to come across like any other players—there to enjoy themselves with the hope of making a few bucks in the process. Friendly conversation is encouraged—even though reciprocation may not occur if you’ve been identified as an advantage casino player. In fact, it can get pretty testy, depending on where you are or what level of professionalism those who’ve discovered you choose to act with. I’m sorry to say I’ve been on the receiving end of some pretty harsh treatment, bordering on harassment, and it took everything in my power to remain both cool and collected. In any event, the goal should be to ingratiate yourself with all casino personnel, whenever possible, with the hope that their positive outlook on you and your play will ultimately earn you bonus miles in the “ability to get a particular casino blackjack department. The counter must remember that retaliation to heat in any form does nothing to promote future playing conditions remaining attractive to you as an advantage player. As long as you have a game, and the game can be beaten, you should do everything in your power to preserve your longevity.

Our attention wanders from the blackjack table with blackjack bonus offers in front of us. You’re amazed at how much money is being placed into action. In most cases, as the crowds increase, so do the table minimums - purely a case of supply and demand. And with virtually everyone playing at a negative expectation, the more money the casino can get players to wager, the more money the casino stands to make. To that I say that a card counter spreading $25 to $400 per hand would have a decent shot at blending in fairly well at a casino like this one. That’s a good thing. The larger casinos catering to "bigger action" allow a counter playing quarters or even black to spread ten to one or more without seemingly standing out - at least for a little while. The flip side for lower-level counters is that the $10 tables are usually mobbed because, although everyone wants to play at the "in" casino, not everyone is willing to ante up to the table minimums typically found at the newer houses. That means fewer hands per hour, and of course that’s only if a seat becomes available. A smaller, less fancy casino would probably have a greater abundance of lower-limit tables with a good Blackjack bonus offers . In fact, it pays for a card counter to play wherever he blends in best with the general population.

The point is that throughout your online casino visit no slot playing session is ever independent of your other sessions. All your slot playing sessions are combined together to reveal, in the end as you go home, the entire block of all sessions combined. Whatever results you have achieved at that point determine your average реr-session win-expectation percentage, and your win-goal achievement levels. You can use this information to more accurately reflect how well you played, and to modify your goals and expectations for future visits. But you must take everything into account, even the value of all the additions you have earned, such as your comps and freebies, and club points. All of this combines to affect your goals, expectations, and final relative results.

This now brings us to the final item in this chapter, and that is the overall win goal and overall win expectation. This is set by you based on bankroll got blackjack, skill, and other abilities, as well as whatever other information and skills you may have acquired. If you have understood what I have attempted to illustrate, then your total win goal for your casino visit should be directly relative to your bankroll and comfort level at the games, as well as your other gaming and playing skills, including selection skills.

As a guide, your overall win goal should be to double your bankroll with slots strategy. Your win expectation should be to come home with 20 percent over and above your bring-in bankroll. If you achieve anything close to this, you have beaten the slot machines, and you have done what fewer than 1 percent of all casino players are able to do. You have become a good, knowledgeable, and responsible slot player. Congratulations!

If you plan to play about three hours a day, for an average of three days, I can offer the following guidelines:

$1 reel slots = $1,000 minimum
$5 reel slots = $5,000 minimum
45-coin nickel video slots = $500 minimum
90-coin nickel video slots = $1,000 minimum
Quarter 3-coin reel slots = $800 minimum
Quarter 2-coin reel slots = $600 minimum
Progressives: $1 three-coin = $100 for a tryout. After that, play something else.
Progressives: $1 two-coin = $80 for a tryout. After that, play something else.
Progressives: quarter 3-coin = $60 for a tryout. After that, play something else.
Progressives: quarter 2-coin = $40 for a tryout. After that, play something else.

What does all this mean, and why is this so? Consider this: For the $1 reel slots, playing 3 hours a day for 3 days, this bankroll of $1,000 comes to only $333 per day, which is only $111 per hour. This is barely adequate. Personally, I wouldn’t go near this kind of action without at least $3,000 as the starting bankroll. But most people will balk at these amounts, so I’m trying to make this at least feasible, and at the same time workable. The $1,000 bankroll is adequate; it will give you that average per-hour amusement, and it will give you a chance to win. However, the best way is to triple that bankroll. That amount will give you the the best odds of success. Again, these are only guidelines. I have no way of knowing what your personal situation may be, or how you see the requirements of a gambling bankroll.

For the $5 reel slots, the $5,000 minimum bankroll comes to $1,666 per day, and about $555 per hour. That’s about as close to the bare minimum as you can get, but it is adequate. In $5 machines, $500 buys you a rack. Assuming 2 coins per pull, with an average of around 15 seconds per pull, plus another 5 seconds for various delays, such as credits running up on the meter, cocktail servers coming by, and so on, this will give you about 3 pulls per minute, which comes to total play time of 37 minutes. About right, for this kind of action. Enough time to enjoy the game, rack in the coins, cash in, and go find another machine for the second hour, and so on. Quite respectable. Personally, I would prefer a stake of $1,000 per hour, for $3,000 per 3-hour day, and a total of $9,000 for the 3-day trip, as de-fined. But that’s up to you. This guideline is, again, derived from the base minimum of what you will need to give the game the best chance to pay you.

Those video nickel machines are a toss-up. With 45 coins, that is $2.25 per pull. With 90 coins, that is $4.50 per pull. Adjust the above figures for the $1 and $5 reel slots, and you can come up with a median on your own.

The quarter reel slots are, well, a downer. I’d say don’t play them at all. But if you must, then bring at least that amount of money. It won’t be the most interesting experience you ever had, but perhaps you are new to spin the reels slots, and this will give you at least a reasonable introduction to the slot playing experience. But try to graduate from the quarter reel slots, and reach at least the $1 level. It will be far more rewarding, and only a little more expensive.

Finally, the progressives. Most of the progressives have enormous odds against a win. Some are no better than state lotteries, with odds of hundreds of millions to one against you. If you must try them, allocate 5 percent of your bankroll, or no more than $100 for those that take $1 tokens (usu-ally 3 at a time), or no more than $40 to $80 for those which are quarters, or nickel progressives. That’s it. That’s your experience with progressives. If you are really lucky and win millions, so much the better, because it didn’t cost you thousands, or tens of thousands, to get it. Be thankful, and send me a commission. For the rest of us, well, we enjoyed our few dollars in the progressives, won nothing, but at least we tried. So now we will do what we know is better— allocate our bankroll for better uses and play those ma-chines which are a much better investment for our hard-earned gambling bankroll.

In a perfect world the rules of blackjack would be exactly the same no matter where one played, from Australia to the Caribbean to the smallest of casinos located in rural areas like Northern Minnesota. But unfortunately what about blackjack rules
that’s not the case, and for the longterm player it’s essential to interface only in games where certain rules don’t negate too much of the edge otherwise obtained through advantage play.

The differences that exist are largely dependent on locale, although variations do exist from casino to casino in the same city. The classic example of this is the difference in how to black jack play online between casinos in downtown Las Vegas and those located out on that amazing stretch of pavement known as the Las Vegas Strip. Downtown, dealers hit on Soft 17 - somewhat of a departure from that old saying we read about in Chapter One: “Dealer must draw to 16, and stand on all 17s”. A change in rules usually means a slight change in the player’s overall advantage or disadvantage. In this case, that’s a slight increase in house advantage, because in those situations where the Exclusive blackjack
dealer would have otherwise stood with 17, he instead will get another chance of improving his hand without the possibility of busting (since the ace can be totaled as “1″ if totaling it as “11″ ends up exceeding 21). In this case, the house advantage increases by about 0.2 percent, which in the long run will end up costing the player a couple of dollars in expected value.

Nowadays, though, that’s rarely the case. Casino rules usually allow the player to split a pair, and then split again only once or twice. When casinos realized resplitting of pairs was advantageous to the player (and especially the card counter in some cases), rules were modified to limit the number of splits allowable on any given hand.

The first thing you should do before sitting down at a table in a casino you’ve never played in before should be to ask about or find out what the rules are. Sometimes signage on the table will mention all or some of what applies. If you’re uncertain about something, don’t be afraid to ask. Most casino personnel will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the game. Of course, be discerning. Ask only a question any normal player might ask, in the way any normal player might ask it. The last thing you want is to be scrutinized as a possible advantage player even before you sit down. In the beginning or for low stakes, I would encourage you to play only in games with the most advantageous sets of rules. But as time goes on you will find that sometimes the necessity of remaining anonymous becomes a higher priority than the attractiveness of a game offered in any particular casino. In other words, even though a mathematically better game may be had in Casino A than in Casinos В through Z, for longevity purposes the pro will instead spread himself around and thus stand a better chance of remaining undetected.

Clearly, the two most common favorable rules are the Early Surrender option and the ability to double down after splitting pairs. The two most common unfavorable rules, other than an increase in the number of decks in use, are doubling down restricted to 10 and 11 only, and games in which the dealer draws on Soft 17.

On the Strip, rules vary from casino to casino. In some places doubling after splitting is allowed, while in others it isn’t. Likewise, surrender can be a "yes" or "no" depending on location. In the same casino, rules at single deck are likely to be a little more restrictive than rules for multiple deck. All in all, the Las Vegas Strip with its single-, double-, and multiple-deck games is one of the more favorable locations in the world to play blackjack, but differences among casinos do exist in terms of what blackjack rules apply. So it’s prudent for the serious player to shop around some for the best game available.
